Standing next to a house that was sheathed last year, it looks like it was just built from timber, though inside it's just a brick box. The secret is in the three-centimeter-thick, one-and-a-half-span-wide boards. We simply call them "false timber," but they transform any wall into a real log structure, without hauling tons of lumber or hiring a team of carpenters.

Twilight here isn't a random choice. It's lightweight, so the frame doesn't complain, but it's resinous: it takes the rain, withstands the sun, and doesn't crack in winter like aspen. The boards contain living knots, light as drops of honey, with only the occasional tiny black spot—like pepper in borscht, just a decorative touch. Kiln-drying removed up to 10% moisture, so when it was brought in from the cold, not a single plank warped. The tongue and groove fit tightly, like the lid on a jar of pickles.
It's easier to install than wallpaper. The bottom board is screwed to the sheathing, and then each subsequent board clicks into place automatically. The fastenings are hidden, so there aren't a single extra hole to be seen. You leave a half-centimeter gap at the base of the wall—the wood needs room to breathe. An evening, a drill, a couple of beers—and the façade already looks like it's been there for a decade.
It's suitable for any place where real logs are difficult to haul: summer cottages, saunas, gazebos, mountain shops, even city office buildings that want to look not like glass and concrete, but like an old Hutsul house. In a year or two, the spruce will darken to a honey color, and the neighbors will start asking where you found such a log house. You can tell the truth, or just smile—it's worth it.
