When we were re-roofing my father's veranda, my father pulled a bundle of planks tied with rope from the cellar and said, "Smereka, it's been standing for a year and won't rot." These planks were exactly 14 by 115, two and a half meters each. He didn't know they were "lining," he simply called them "wall rails." I remember the smell: warm, with a slightly bitter note, like tea with spruce buds.
Spruce has one useful property: it quickly releases heat. In winter, when there's a blizzard outside, a wall made of it doesn't chill your back. Over the summer, the boards yellow slightly, the knots become more visible—vivid and light—while the black ones are almost invisible, save for a tiny ghost-like dot. Kiln-drying draws out moisture evenly, so not a single rail "give way" after the first heating season. The geometry is like a school ruler: the tongue fits into the groove with a gentle click, no need to adjust it with a chisel.
Installation is a one-evening job with just one drill. I screw the bottom beam to the battens, then insert each subsequent board with my finger, securing it with a screw at an angle—the fasteners are hidden, revealing only the smooth wood. I leave a half-centimeter gap at the floor and ceiling—the wood needs room to stretch. Overnight, the room absorbs the smell, and in the morning, you want to sit barefoot on the floor and watch the light play in the knots.
Where can you do it? Anywhere you need a wall to breathe: a veranda, a bathhouse, a kitchen, a bedroom, a hallway. Even in an old apartment, where the wallpaper peeled back in the days of cassette tape players, twenty tracks can make the room look ten years younger. After installation, two coats of oil or matte varnish are enough – and it's ready to take on palms, backs, children's stickers, and cat claws.
