Wooden counting sticks according to the Cuisenaire method (56 pieces + 10 double-sided task cards) are a universal teaching aid for developing mathematical abilities in children. They are known by various names – a set of sticks for numbers, "numbers in color," "colored sticks," and "colored numbers." The sticks are 10 mm long and vary in length and color. Sticks of the same length are made in a single color. The longer the stick, the greater the numerical value it represents – the smallest stick ("one") is 10 mm long and represents the number 1, the next longer stick is 10 mm and represents the next ordinal digit: pink – the number 2 (20 mm), blue – the number 3 (30 mm), and so on.
Each set contains 10 double-sided colored cards with tasks of three difficulty levels. The cards are 10 x 10 cm in size.
Using the example of counting sticks, a child quickly, clearly, and through play gains an understanding of basic mathematical principles:
- number and its composition
- natural series of numbers
/> - direct and reverse digit
- quantities and concepts: greater, less, equal, higher, lower, longer, shorter
- orientation on the plane, right, left
- addition, subtraction on sticks
- help in learning the multiplication table
- a visual demonstration of the division of a whole into parts.
The sticks are designed for playing and learning with children aged 3-8 years at home and in New Zealand.
